The Sand Garden Grenache is a small parcel of incredibly special fruit fromold vines planted in 1900 on our Arila Gardens property. The vines aregnarly and twisted with deep rootsystems spanning the predominately sandover clay earth beneath. The philosophy of this Grenache is simple; to makea world class Grenache that expresses this sought-after variety, from thishistoric place, in this time to be savoured for many years to come.

Tasting Note

Grape Variety: Grenache.

Vintage Conditions

Winter 2021 was recorded as the wettest in 25 years for Northern Barossa, setting up the vines well for the growing season. Other than one welcomed rain event on 1 March, the summer was dry. The cool conditions allowed for the steady ripening of fruit to its optimum flavour, colour, and tannin development. Wines of the 2022 vintage are characterised by having lovely natural balance, brightness of fruit, perfume, and long fine structural palates.

Absolutely awesome! Adjectives just don’t work here so it’s best that you get this Arila Gardens Sand Garden Grenache 2022 into your glass. A buffet of juicy fruit throws itself at you. Blueberries, mulberries and raspberries all rise up and are supported by pretty scents of red petals, red licorice and cherry pie aromas. Stunning! Super fine sandy tannins speak of the soils these vines are grown in, and having walked the site earlier this year, the impact of the vineyard is telling. A flash of meatiness comes and goes but that thick paste of blueberries and mulberries just hit and stick. The balance is supreme and the length seemingly hangs on for days. A sheer delight to drink now, I’d love to see this with ten years under its belt.

Old vine Barossa Grenache continues to garner fans, so it should, as one of the great Aussie wine styles. This is from a small plot planted back in 1900 in the Moppa sub-region, on the family’s estate. Previous vintages have drawn forth rave reviews and lofty scores. This one deserves no less. The colour is a glorious vibrant purple and the nose simply gorgeous, with florals, rose petals, cherries, chocolate and blueberries. The texture is supple and seamless, there is grip but it is ever-so-silky, and bright acidity runs the length. A very long finish, to enjoy for the next six to eight years.Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot, 96 Points.

A wonderfully seductive rendition of the variety, showing dark berry, dried herb, roasted nut, clove and rich floral aromas, it’s splendidly rounded and succulent in the mouth offering terrific richness with beautifully integrated tannins, making it velvety and refined with a lingering flavoursome finish. At its best: now to 2037.Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 96 Points.
